Why I like (or don’t dislike) the Gates/Seinfeld Churro Ad.
I actually liked the Gates/Seinfeld (Windows?) Churro Ad. Not too many people did. The thing I liked about it was that it didn’t try to attack Apple. It didn’t even try to sell windows (at least not that hard). It basically presented Bill Gates in a conversational style.
Microsoft is large. It is much easier to dismiss and disparage a large company than one that is perceived as being made of talented individuals. By presenting Bill Gates in a conversational style, they are helping their image.
In addition, if they end up financing a sitcom that people enjoy, that’s also a good thing.
Yeah, Seinfeld might not be the hippest choice. But, let’s face it. The hipsters have already switched to Apple. The Geeks are already switching to Linux (or Apple). Microsoft’s biggest forte is the business community. They tend to be older, and more of the Seinfeld type. A large threat is that their business customers move over to Apple (or Desktop Linux).
Re-iterating that they are innovating is a good idea. (Although I thinkg there must be a better comparison than chocolate cake.)
